Abstract: The entrance of distributed energy resources (DER) is growing worldwide fast due to environmental issues, high energy generation costs, and fossil fuel shortage. Gas-fired micro-turbines, wind-turbine, and photovoltaic are typical models of DERs that dispersedly is connected to the energy systems. The virtual power plant (VPP) concept is described as a set of DERs, energy storages, and flexible loads, which can sell power to customers and participate in the wholesale market in order to maximize its profit. The VPP concept can be applied as an efficient solution to cover the difficulties related to the nature of DERs. Given the VPP concept, achieving coordinated optimization control of DERs and improving intermittent renewable energy reliability is much easier than before. It is noticeable that the VPP enhances the efficiency of the power system with less investment in infrastructure. Applying the co-generation heat and power units like combined heat and power (CHP) plants is a reasonable method to convey industrial, commercial, and residential sectors' heat and power demands. CHP units retrieve wasted heat from producing power and supply it to the thermal energy consumers. Hence, the energy supply efficiency rises up to 90%, and the gasses emission decreases up to 13%-18%. Another substantial advantage of the CHP unit is enhancing the flexibility and security of the system. Therefore, aggregation of CHP units into the energy systems due to their benefits in decreasing gas pollution and cost-saving has been widespread.
